The Emergence of the Virtual Observatory

Date: 31st January 2008 at 7.30
Presenter: Bob Bentley
Venue: Room 01.10, Elizabeth Fry Building, UEA, Norwich
Synopsis: Advances in computing over the last 10-15 years have transformed data analysis. Twenty years ago data was stored on magnetic tapes and the scientist had to travel to data centres in order to access them. With the advent of the Internet and cheap large capacity disks, data became more accessible; with the development of "Grid" middlewhere it has become possible to undertake complex tasks remotely. In many disciplines Virtual Observatories are being established to bring these enhanced capabilities to the community.

In this talk we will discuss how the changes are opening up science in all domains, how changes in technology are helping and some of the issues involved. We will examine how differences in the disciplines present different challenges to the emerging technology and how things might develop in the future. In particular we will discuss virtual observatories that combine observations from space and ground based platforms.

Bob Bentley is a scientist at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, University College London and for more than 20 years he has been involved in developing instruments for space missions that observe the Sun and then exploiting the data. He established the Yohkoh Data Archive Centre to provide access to mission data for European scientists and he is the Coordinator of the European Grid of Solar Observations (EGSO), a project that was funded by the European Community.
